I recognize the vintage as all Romulan ale is bottled differently according to the time period when it was bottled. That bottle of ale Engineer Scott is serving from is likely 30 years old if my guess about its vintage is correct."

Engineer Scott heard what the lady commander just said so he replied:

"Actually missy, The Federation considers Romulan ale illegal contraband, but everyone in Starfleet looks the other way when a bottle of Romulan ale is produced and served. We have learned that serving Romulan ale with its intoxicating effects smooths things over at official dinners like this one we are having right now, especially, when dining with some of our enemies, like you missy. If you get my meaning, I meant no disrespect."

The commander smiled and too a sip of her ale:

"We Romulans also serve Romulan ale at our official functions for an identical reason."

As the roasted game hen dinner was served, Dr. McCoy had something to add to the polite conversation:

"Excuse me madam, but I wouldn't have thought the warlike Romulans would permit females to command Romulan starships."

The pretty commander smiled then replied to the doctor:

"We Romulans consider both sexes to be equals as warriors, so the fact that I happen to be a woman is of no consequence whatsoever. Tell me Captain Kirk. How many women serve as Federation captains?"

Kirk as forced to admit the truth about Federation Captains:

"At present none, Mam. But there's no official ban on females serving as Federation Captains. It has to do with the type of overtly feminine women we currently enjoy in our culture. Evidently, while many women serve equally well as Starfleet officers, so far no woman has elected to undergo training for a captaincy. I assume that's because our women think being a Federation captain is too masculine a job so they just aren't interested. Also our society is mostly pleasure based, while Romulan society is martial. From your point of view, as a quite lovely Romulan woman, becoming the commander of a starship may go without saying."

The lady commander smiled again then she replied:

"Actually, Captain Kirk, I was drafted. After that I advanced quickly to the rank of commander."

Mr. Spock cut in:

"Commander, I noticed you have an excellent command of Federation Standard English. That surprised me, given you are Romulan. Can you shed light on this subject?"

The commander replied:

"All Romulan military personnel are taught to speak, read and write the enemies languages. I am also fluent in Klingonese, Andorian, and the Vulcan language, as it is similar to our own language, given we Romulans ancestors were Vulcans."

Spock was keen to hear that much:

"I have long since conjectured the Romulan civilization origins came from a common Vulcan ancestry. I take it based on what you just said that is what the people of Romulas believe?"

The commander replied:

"Yes, Mr. Spock that is my people's belief. Only we Romulans ancestors elected to leave Vulcan to form our own culture because our Vulcan ancestors embraced their emotions and martial tendencies so they refused to participate in non-emotion and Surak's IDIC ideology."

Spock replied:

"I will make mental note of these Romulan beliefs, thank you commander. This conversation with you on this subject of our common ancestry is fascinating. I hope we can speak more about that in the near future."

The pretty lady commander then took a more serious tone:

"Captain Kirk, I am assuming you have standing orders to have someone interrogate me?"

Kirk was coy:

"Indeed I do mam. But you will find out Federation interrogation techniques do not utilize torture, if that's what might be worrying you right now."

The commander replied:

"We Romulans know the Federation is soft and that it does not permit any kind of torture as my people may elect to employ. Tell me Captain do you find me to be cruel? After all I was prepared to have you tortured and I had already order Mr. Spock to be executed for treason."

Kirk smiled:

"Cruel, maybe yes, but then wasn't that your job according to the Romulan way? Regardless of what we think about the Romulan way, that is not actually their fault because it is merely a matter of who they are and the culture they were born into. We think now that you are living among us in time you may come to regard our ways as superior to yours. I sincerely hope that is true. I'd like to know that you managed to fit in somehow."

The commander smiled:

"I am sorry to disappoint you Captain Kirk, but as a Romulan commander, who finds herself a captive behind enemy lines, it is simply not my job to try and fit in!"

Kirk figured as much:

"Well at the very least mam, we do hope you don't create more trouble for yourself."

The commander had finished eating her hen and vegetables and she had her fill of Romulan ale:

"The dinner you served me was delicious. But I am weary after a long intense past day. May I be excused? I wish to go back to my quarters to rest and think over my current situation."

Everyone stood as the Captain spoke:

"We were all delighted to dine with you Commander. I hope you rest peacefully. Mr. Spock will be coming the fetch you in the morning."

The commander turned to face Mr. Spock:

"Mr. Spock, maybe we can resume our conversation about our common ancestry after my interrogation is finished for the day tomorrow?"

Mr. Spock replied:

"Yes, I'd like that, commander. Good night."

Before the commander could leave the banquet hall Uhura called out to her:

"Oh, Commander! About those clothes I promised to loan you? I'll bring you some tonight."

The commander nodded then she departed along with the red shirt security guard as her escort.
